| Description | Pennant was primarily interested in fossils and minerals during the 1750's but by 1762 he had switched his attention to other aspects of natural history such as zoology and ornithology and the correspondence with da Costa gradually faded away, the last letter being written to Pennant in 1780. The final letters in the volume are those exchanged between Richard Pennant Baron Penrhyn and da Costa in the 1780's when the latter made up several mineral collections for his Lordship. Many of da Costa's letters are in the British Library. It has been found necessary to number the letters. The title page reads as follows: "Letters between Thomas Pennant Esq. and Emanuel Mendes da Costa. On subjects of Natural History; with a few other letters on the same subject from 1752-1778." |
