TitleRADFORD FAMILY OF ATHERSTONE
Date1806-1954
DescriptionHenry Radford, son of John Radford was an attorney in Atherstone and ran his own solicitors firm in Long Street from the early nineteenth century. He held the office of Steward of the Manor of Atherstone up to circa 1880 and was also listed as Clerk to the Trustees of the Turnpike Roads in the 1854 Kelly's Directory. He also appeared in the lists of 'gentry' and 'private residents' in contemporary trade directories. His son, Edward Vaughan Radford, born 1827, joined the firm at Long Street circa 1867 and the solicitors henceforth became known as 'Radford and Son Solicitors.' From circa 1883 Edward became head of the firm, but there are no details of Henry Radford's other children listed in the trade directories. Henry's four other children were Henry (born 1825), Augusta (born 1830), Charlotte (born 1836) and Frederick (born 1839).Much of the collection concerns Henry Radford Snr's career, consisting largely of his articles of clerkship in 1806, when he was apprenticed to Charles Vicar Hunter, an attorney at the Court of the King's Bench, and subsequent letters of appointment or admission to the same and other legal institutions from 1812.

Letters; appointments of family members as Commissioners of Oaths; admissions to the Court of Common Pleas and the Court of King's Bench of family members as attorneys; notes on childhood illnesses in the family etc.
