In former articles I have spoken of Thomas Grey, Marquis of Dorset, and his connection with Jesus Hall (DR0429/206) and of the bell given to Trinity in Julyns Billers' year (DR0429/208). Sam. Marler (DR0429/206), the descendant of the last surviving trustee, to whom Jesue Hall was conveyed in Bowde's vicariate, 1499, was, I should say, somewhat fallen in estate, being but a tiler, while the "Leet Book" shows that his grandfather, Richard Marler, had been one of the foremost men of the city. He was also the founder of the chapel in Trinity called after his name. Sharp ("Antiquities," p. 117) gives Wanley's description of the beautiful old house known as Jesus Hall, and of the rebus put up in the window in memory of Thomas Bowde. |
