DescriptionCorrespondence from C.R. Digby (vicar, 1902-1916) of Reading and later Basingstoke, to the Rev. S.G. Waters, his successor, re Digby's annual pension assigned by the Bishop's Commission on his retiring (4 Dec 1916), under the Incumbents Resignation Acts, from the emolument of the living and his pension granted by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and related matters re their operation and arrangement. Digby refers in his correspondence to a number of matters which he dealt with during his incumbency including the glebe buildings belonging to the parsonage, the rating of the vicarage, state of the fabric of the same, dilapidations surveys and repairs carried out during Digby's incumbency (including work to the roof by Mansell of Birmingham), the liability of the incoming incumbent to take over fixtures, the garden fruit trees at the vicarage, the drainage of Church Field and wayleave for the same (as in DR0261/26), impurities in the pumpwater, drainage problems at the vicarage, (including a reference to Moathouse Farm), the income of the benefice (referring to the benefactions by C.W. Digby as in DR0261/23) and its augmentation, the influence of Meriden Union on its surrounding parishes (schools, charities etc.), the living and its income (tax, glebe buildings, tithe and the corn rent payable under the Private Enclosure Act of 1785 and leasing of the glebe).
