TitleBoundary dispute: MS "statement" re a claim by Clifford Chambers parish (then in Glos.) to part of Ailston Field (else "Ailston Grounds") as being in the parish of Clifford rather than. Atherstone-on-Stour (in Warks.).
Datec.1730-1740
DescriptionThe quarrel between the 2 parishes over the Field had emerged when the Overseer of Clifford had applied to the Justices of Glos. for a warrant of distress (subsequently refused) upon John Malins who refused to pay the pound rent levied. Malins rented Ailston Field and "Flines Field" farm and "Monks Closes" and was being charged by the Overseer of Clifford for land in Ailston Field for which he paid money for the poor relief of Atherstone-on-Stour. Hence he refused payment and the Overseer sought a warrant. The statement also refers to the administrative position of Atherstone-on-Stour within the constablewick of Whitchurch and the jurisdiction of the constable re the payment of land tax and, secondly, to 3 barns erected on the grounds at Ailston Field ("and there are commonly great Numbers of vagrants travel this part of ye World who/very often take up their lodgings at these places [deleted]/") re which of the two parishes such vagrants should claim poor relief from. A second/?later hand implies, in a short note on the 4th side, that the dispute was caused by the portion of the Ailston tithes belonging to the clergyman of Clifford which led to the mistaken assumption "that the land from which these Tythes arise is in Clifford parish or that the amount of Tithe should be rateable". No Date, c.1730/40.
