TitleLetter of Richard Neville, earl of Warwick and captain of Calais, to Thomas Hugford, William Berkswell, and Nicholas Rody [executors of Richard Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, d. 1439], desiring them to reinstate Sir William Oldhall as steward of the lordship of Saam [Saham Tony, Norfolk] in place of [Sir Thomas] Tudenham
Date[1457×1459]
DescriptionWritten at Calais, 19th April [between 1457 and 1459]. Seal: sealed on dorse with the earl's signet seal, displaying a bear and ragged staff (red wax, protected by a twisted band of hay). [See article by P B Chatwin in the Transactions of the Birmingham Archaeological Society for 1935, vol. LIX, pp.2-8. Neville was captain of Calais in 1455, but did not go there until the autumn of 1456. He was in Ireland in April 1460, and Oldhall died late in 1460. This letter was also shown to the Archaeological Institute by C D Greenway in 1864, and was apparently acquired with the charter of c.1123 by Chatwin in 1933: see Archaeological Journal, vol. 22 for 1865 (B.WAR.Gre (P)) and St Mary's Parish Magazine for November 1933 (DR1130/100)]
