TitleRebuilding of the Parish Church, 1870-1885
AdminHistoryAt the Easter Vestry Meeting in 1870 it was decided to spend money on church repairs and to open accounts to receive subscriptions for rebuilding whence an Executive Committee for Rebuilding the parish church (and a Sub-Committee) were set up to administer the operation. William Butterfield was consulted as architect and he produced a report and plans (see DR0781/28-29). Yet by 1874, on the death of the incumbent, the Rev. John Moultrie (1825-1874), the building scheme was reviewed and, in view of the poor response, was suspended. But his successor, the Rev. John Murray (1875-1897) revived the movement for rebuilding. Butterfield's plans were passed and the building contract placed in the hands of John Parnell & Sons of Rugby and "matters then proceeded apace".
