TitleLetter from James Backhouse on board "The Science of Scarbro" to Jeffrey Bevington Lowe
Date15 Nov 1831
DescriptionHe has been sailing on the desolate ocean since the 9th September and expects to arrive at the Cape of Good Hope in a few days. Last sight of land was Cape Finisterre on the north coast of Spain. He has recovered from sea sickness and he and his companion, George W.Walker are comfortable. There are on board 15 crew, 4 cabin passengers and 58 steerage passengers; most of the latter are Chelsea Pensioners who have commuted their pensions and are going out as emigrants. Amongst them all kinds of vice are to be found and there was near mutiny when the Captain tried to prevent drunkenness and on another occasion near murder too. They pray for them and read to them twice a day from Holy Scriptures and this seems to have helped a little. His journal has been sent to brother Thomas et al. His children will be with his mother or Elizabeth Janson. Hopes all Friends will not bury their talents etc. Note that they anchored at Cape Town, 05 Dec. Postmark from Cape Town.
