TitleStratford-upon-Avon Guardians' Committee
DescriptionAs a result of the 1929 Local Government Act, the 643 Boards of Guardians in England and Wales were abolished and their responsibilities passed to local authorities. The remaining workhouses became Public Assistance Institutions and continued to provide accommodation for the elderly, chronic sick, unmarried mothers and vagrants. This system continued until the formation of the National Health Service in 1948.
