DescriptionThis volume was originally used by Handley and Co, coal and lime merchants of Emscote, Warwick. The long standing partnership between John Tomes and William Handley as coal and lime merchants was dissolved in 1842 and this ledger maybe the earliest of a new firm founded by William Handley. There is no known evidence for the firm after 1846, perhaps there is a connection with the financial troubles of William Handley of Barford, farmer in 1845, see CR566/607. Notable clients included Thomas Bromwich of St.Johns, Lord Leigh of Stoneleigh, Dormer of Grove Park, H.E.Landor, Earl of Clarendon, Jaggerd Hiorns and Co and Warwick Gas Co.
An entry in 1886 records that the ledger has been purchased by William Cardall of Southam and used by him for his business as a coal dealer.
