Dispatch of locket, not the one mentioned in previous letter, which was given to Lady Elizabeth instead: thanks for letter from Turin: his being obliged to stay at Rome, but then on "the wide seas": welfare of his dog Driver in their household, where Ernest and Mrs Brooke are also present: packing started [for re-building]: success at letting of farm: coal business operating at a loss of £400pa: prospect of their separation only being a short one, happy for herself and father: all being well at Froyle, with them due to go to a ball at Salisbury: blessings of her "own Pothie" [nickname for Wathen]. PS: "They talk of emancipating the Negroes directly without any compensation. What will become of us!".
