13 May: Newspaper report of Wathen appointment as successor to Mr Parish as Secretary to the Legation in Greece at the court of King Otho: sittings for Mr Ross: Ernest's copy of Wathen's miniature finished: anxiety, for state of his healt, at the court not being in Athens yet: getting a cook book for him: thanks for carpet, said to be one of the most handsome sent to England: husband, father and Lady Howe all well: dining with Miss Emma Chalonner, friend of Mr Cumberbatch and Mr Dawkins: taking advantage of a rainy afternoon to write, as opposed to the usual bustle of London: things looking black with regard to the West Indies and the coal company: 15 May: nothing to add other than father will write and all being quite well.
