Disappointment at letter of her father, showing him to be in excited state of mind, the use of laudanum for so long having made his reason totter: thoughts on Wathen's dilemma and his two proposed courses of action, first to remain in England to calm father's mind but at the possible loss of his profession, the second to go to Greece but after a short delay of three months: contradiction of father's statement that his life and death is in Wathen's hands: her suggestion of a compromise, of possibly a year's leave of absence, with father making lengthy visits to his other children: his wife Kate being pleased at the prospect of living with him in Athens, with her father's unselfish blessing: the impossiblity of father living with her or Ernest, particularly in her case with John's state of nerves and her own stipulation at the time of his proposal of marriage on John's mother not living with them: consideration of proposal by Mr Baillie for her to come to town, providing father wants her there: father in his youth taking up high Calvinistic doctrines, sometimes believing himself a wretch predestined to egternal damnation, and Mr Baillie's suggestion that such ideas have taken possession of him again.
