TitleCalendars of prisoners held in the gaols (by area/date)
DescriptionThe calendars of prisoners in the gaol are an incomplete series. They are listed as they accrued in date order; early on two lists were published: the calendar of prisoners (which gave the name of the prisoner, age, ability to read and write, and details of the offence including where it took place), and the lists of sentences of prisoners, which contained the above information and also the sentence passed.
After 1842, Coventry was included in the county and separate calendars were kept until 1854, when the one calendar included Coventry and Birmingham, which latter appears as a separate prison from 1851. There are no calendars which include Coventry after Summer 1857, and after Spring 1882 there is no separate mention of Birmingham prisoners.
