Description | Written from Horse Guards, addressed to Sir William Waller in error. Reply to letter of the 27th: his perfectly remembering Lord Hardinge's intention to have allowed his son to purchase the company he was in, at that time expected to become vacant in the 7th Fusiliers on the retirement of Major Shipley, and his not failing to mention to His Royal Highness whenever any opportunity for purchase occurred in that regiment: his need, however, to be aware of a recent instance of a captain having applied to retire by sale of his commission in a regiment where 2 captains were reduced and the decision for the lieutenant purchasing the commission to be placed on half pay, which was to be adopted in similar cases: his not failing to make His Royal Highness aware of reports made to Lord Hardinge relating to his son's conduct on more than one occasion in the Crimea: Lord Hardinge's expressed desire to promote him on any fair opportunity in his regiment when he has served the required time or become eligible under the memorandum applicable to regiments in the field.
