Description | Photograph by P.B. Chatwin. West face of tower above plinth between NW buttress and W window. This tower was pointed about 30 years ago when it is evident by the shape of the pointing material that the masonry generally was in good order except, perhaps, at the joints. The cement pointing has prevented the joints draining, with the result that the whole of the stonework has decayed, doubtless caused by the water (probably charged with lime) collecting in cavities behind the stones finding its way out to the surface instead of along the joints.[File - Meriden] |
