Description | Each year's bundle was tied together and numbered (presumably by the School Treasurer in chronological order of receipt/payment on settlement of bills) year by year. The bills relate to the repair and maintenance of the fabric and furnishings of the building; the purchase, inter alia, of stationery, ironomongery, timber, brick, stone, coal, linen and drapery and grocery for the same; annual insurance of the school buildings; payment of teachers' and assistants' salaries etc. Consequently the bills etc. record the names and addresses (on billheads etc.) of many local builders, bricklayers, ironmongers, haberdashers, drapers, grocers, printers, chemists, brush-makers, collieries, quarries, sawmills, and related traders and tradesmen. Many of the early bills relate to the erection of the school by the fox Brothers of Atherstone and the equipping of it with furniture and books etc. |
