DescriptionIndenture of lease by Sir Thomas Puckering of the Priory near Warwick, knight and baronet, and his trustees William Vyner, gent, George Weale, gent, Humfrey Kerby, gent, William Harmar, woollen draper, and Roger Edes, apothecary, all of the town of Warwick, of the 1st part, to Thomas Greene of the town of Warwick, weaver, of the 2nd part, of a tenement in the Walditch in Warwick (newly built, the middle one of three), to be held for a term of 21 years [no annual rent stated], provided Greene takes on Edward Ley, son of Richard Ley, as his first apprentice for 7 years, and then two other apprentices in turn for further periods of 7 years, as nominated by Sir Thomas or, after his death, by his daughter Jane, and teaches and instructs them in his trade as a weaver: it is recited that Sir Thomas by a deed of feoffment of 20 Apr 9 Chas [1633] had conveyed to the trustees as above (also including Thomas Gibbes, esquire, since deceased) three messuages, one in the Walditch (lately occupied by John Ley) and two in Rother Cheaping, to build six new tenements, and that three new tenements had been built out of the messuage in the Walditch and were intended to be used to house tradesmen of Warwick and their apprentices.
