TitleLetter from Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, to Mr W Phipps [later Sir Jonathan Wathen Waller]
Datec1796
DescriptionWriting to settle his account with him, having thought about "Mr Wathen's peculiar state" since Phipps left her: the difficulty of calculating, the Duke having often pressed her to name the sum: his having attended her for 7 months almost twice a day, rounded out to 6 months twice a day, £365 at his usual price: his having lived there for 2 months, with £100 for it being a mere cataract case: only taking him 10 days: request for an honest sum to tell the Duke, e.g. £500-700: meaning to clear to the present, with a regular weekly fee from then on, being sure of greater improvement, with gratitude for the present: request for him to answer fairly and honestly, with apology for appearance of indelicacy.
