Description | Written from the Camp before Sebastopol. 20 Jan: opportunity to write a longer letter than last time: waiting to hear about something startling in the next couple of days: a great deal of firing last night, particulalrly with the French: in the trenches tonight, but with some grog, so ought to be comfortable. 21 Jan: night in the trenches with Major, now Lieutenant Colonel Jefferies, in a hole with fire made by sappers: receipt of woollen socks and muffetees: going to Balaklava to find out about the furs: arrival of horses from Varna, which means more material can be brought up from Balaklava: thaw of heavy snow, meaning batteries and trenches in awful state of sloppiness, good boots being the cheif things to have: weather warmer, even hot during last night. 22 Jan: return from Balaklava without parcels: the French having taken over the piquets, leaving them only the trenches, with another division to help: hope of better weather helping with sick list, large in their division. Sheet, with 6 pages of text, including 2 pages cross-hatched. |
