Account of engagement last night, with the French taking Mamelon and the British the Quarries, a large trench formed partly of large blocks of stone: his and Lord Browne getting together 100 men to reinforce a storming party, with several charges, with working party at the rear covering them: the Quarries held in spite of several counter-attacks: miracle he survived the night, but he did receive grape shot on the head, which stunned him and led to some bleeding: being comfortable now, but not allowed in the sun: soldiers returning from the fighting, covered in dust powder, smoke, blood and dirt, with everybody tired: continual fighting, even with stones at times: regiment suffering severely, with 100 dead or wounded out of 300, with 4 officers wounded but not seriously: other regiments involved included those of the Light and 2nd Division. PS: 10000 killed and wounded out of 50000 French.
