Description | Written from the Camp before Sebastopol. Receipt of letter dated 2 June: with the death of the adjutant after having his leg off and the wounding of his successor, his being acting adjutant for a month or 6 weeks: it giving him the chance to learn a great deal , with Colonel having been an adjutant himself: his only being in the trenches one day in 18-19: sapping towards the Redan and Round Tower: running his pony in a race, purely to make up the numbers: last wound being all right, but not quite healed up yet: brigade unlikely to be sent to storm because so cut up: risk of cholera in hot weather, with dust (like Brussels): wounded officers doing well, with Fitzclarence, whose leg was amputated very high, getting on better than ever expected: Appleyard and himself being in the Colonel's former tent and more comfortable: letter to Anna. PS: wish to have been on the expedition to Kertsch rather than doing duty in hot trenches: thanks to little Anna. Date given as June 2, obviously a mistake from context of other letters: someone had marked on in pencil "20th ?". |
