Description | Written from Balaklava. Her enquiring of him from her first arrival at camp and hearing about him: trying to contact him when he had his slight flesh wound, but her letter not passed on by Lord Raglan's orderly: her telegraph sent, on being informed by Mrs Bracebridge of Mrs Waller's unease, meeting with swift and brief response: her surprise at his being on the "Imperator" going to Scutari: her going to see him, well enough to walk on deck but looking weak from fever: writing to Miss Nightingale about him, and her enclosed response on his being taken care of while near her: her opinion that he should not return to duty, knowing the privations of the army, the climate, and his suffering in the camp last winter, with fear of relapses to a weakened constitution, if he returns too soon: feelings of gratitude to her and her husband for their kindnesses. PS: asking for forgiveness in case she has said too much, having an arduous life surrounded by sickness and sorrows, with not enough well doctors and orderlies to do duty in the hospital, as well as fearful cases of cholera. Sheet, with 7 pages of text, including 3 pages cross-hatched. |
