receipt of letter of 18 August: opening of fire the morning after he came up: general opinion of the south side not holding out much longer, getting an awful hammering from the allied batteries: last night, burning in the harbour, making a splendid blaze, of one of the ships known as the 12 Apostles which annoyed the French on 18 July: Miss Weir [Wear] having written a letter while he was in Balaklava harbour before going to Scutari, which was not received: his being almost sure of getting the adjutancy, with recommendation of commanding officer, the answer coming from England in possibly a fortnight: sorry for them receiving the information he was much worse than he was and being alarmed unnecessarily, his being all right now: thanks to mother and little Anna for letters.
