TitleLetter from George Henry Waller to his father
Date18-20 Nov 1855
DescriptionWritten from Camp Sebastopol.
18 Nov: receipt of letter, which he now cannot find: big news of a fearful explosion at camp, while he was out riding: his being charged by a runaway horse and being knocked off but not hurt: leading his mount home on foot, and meeting his regiment on the front road, out of the way of the shells: returning at 5 in the evening to find damage to the messroom, but having as good a dinner as usual, having propped up the roof: turning out at 5 in the morning in case of Russian attack, but nothing happening: the explosion taking place 160 from their camp, with the hospitals being knocked down, but with only a few patients in them: belief of its having been started by Frenchmen packing fuses and smoking at the same time or a Frenchman taking a fuse out of a shell: arrival of the "Imperatrice" at Balaklava, but no receipt of his things apart from trousers: enquiry about name being put down for the Rag, or Army and Navy Club: seeing Miss Weir and hearing of her having informed them of his safety: weather turning much colder: news of MacHenry getting a company, with only Gervais and Jones ahead of him (with hope that Gervais does not get one, having been there only a week). 20 Nov: excavation of stone for roads between camp and Balaklava, revealing small houses and pots: sight of snow for the first time today.
Two sheets, with 8 pages of text and a few lines cross-hatched on the 1st page of the 2nd sheet.
