No receipt of mail, probaly because of windy weather: there being two ships called "Imperatrice", the one with his parcels (still to be forwarded) having stopped at Constantinople: very rainy weather, with the camp covered in mud and dirt: looking forward to a steeplechase for English and French horses in a week, with dinner at French restaurant afterwards: near-completion of roads, with start of building of railway at Balaklava: query about Eddy's [cousin Edmund Waller] being gazetted and joining the 7th Fusiliers, with supposition of his arriving in March: no news apart from the retreat of the Russians from the north side, albeit firing heavier than usual.
