Receipt of letters of 26 Nov and 15 Dec: McHenry having a company: long talk with the Colonel, with only one being above him for his company: his resignation of the adjutancy and his posting to the company of which he will be captain to gain experience for when he is appointed, with the Colonel also having time to train CE Hope as an adjutant: his giving Daly's letter to his son and being impressed by his appearance: request for him to write to Winchester to get his gun, useful for marching and getting dinner, together with supplies of shot, powder, etc: receipt of sacrament on Christmas Day: surprise at progress of Lot [sister Charlotte] in drawing: arrival of things sent by father (boots, Fortnum and Mason box, cooking stove used as a lantern), but not books and cigarettes: thanks to mother and Sophy for letters: heavy falls of snow and cold weather, with making of sleighs: growing of moustache, but "no great shakes yet".
