TitleLetter from William Williamson junior to his father William Williamson senior
Date9th Apr 1873
DescriptionWritten from Bury St Edmunds
Acknowledges receipt of his letter of the 6th, he needed to consider carefully before writing this reply; although he can refute the allegations contained in his father's letter he intends to leave them alone rather than dragging others into this unhappy business; he has not used his testimonials yet as he got his present situation before he obtained them; he is suprised that his father is voluntarily giving his opinion of his character; his father is correct that he visited Mrs Rogers and she gave him a sovereign, this he sent to her son Harry to return to her as it is his own intention not to come to Leamington; since leaving Leamington he has done his duty to his employer; he believed that his father had written to his employer about him and told his uncle so but he hears from his uncle that his father denies doing this; his uncle has a daughter who is always happy to see him and he her, compare this to what his own situation was at home; the words his father spoke to him that night are burnt into his head; his little brother and sisters are never allowed to see or speak to their father but are still expected to be affectionate children; he is not so ungrateful as his father thinks and can see that he wasted his time at Mr O's; if he cannot keep his current place he intends to advertise; he understands that it is his father's wish that henceforth they shall remain strangers; he shall never come and beg for charity.
