Description | Photograph by E Sapcote. It was built in the early 15th C by John Middleton to free the people of Marton from the burden of the toll bridge which has existed there since at least the reign of Henry III (1216-1272). Middleton was born at Marton and had made his fortune as a mercer in London. The double chamfered arch stones are paralleled at Blythe Bridge, although in the latter case they have been hidden by the widening in 1926. Marton Bridge was widened on the up-stream side comparatively recently. [File - Marton] |
