AdminHistory | Eleanor Elizabeth Archer was the daughter of Joseph and Susannah de Tedney Archer. Joseph Archer was a farm labourer, later a farm manager. He was born circa 1829 in Warton (CRO reference 1871 census for Hunningham, reel 22). Susannah de Tedney Archer was the elder daughter of the Reverend Charles Edward Collins, sometime vicar of Lullington, Derbyshire, (circa 1792-circa 1859) [ reference Alumni Oxoniensis]. Susannah was born in Lullington circa 1825 (CRO reference 1871 census, reel 22). Eleanor was baptised (spelled Elinor) 29 September 1861 at Warton (CRO reference DRB 49/1, entry number 224). By January 1864 Eleanor Elizabeth Archer's parents had moved to Hunningham where her father was a farm bailiff (see baptism and burial entries for Joseph Edward de Tedney Archer, 17 and 23 January 1864, CRO reference DR 190/1, entry number 379 and DR897/3 entry number 281). Another son was baptised 27 August 1865: Edward de Tedney Archer (DR 190/1 entry number 394). He was buried at Sherborne 1 September 1898, aged 33 (DR 554/3, entry number 533). Three of the family appear on the 1881 census at Harbury. By August 1886 they were living at Moreton Hill Farm, Moreton Morrell. In October 1887 they were living at the Poplars, Sherborne. Eleanor Elizabeth Archer's mother was buried at Sherborne 12 May 1888, aged 63 (DR 554/3, entry number 496). Her father re-married, this time to Sabina Hibbs in 1894 in Essex. They had several children: Jeanette Mary Hibbs Archer, baptised at Sherborne 23 February 1896 (DR 109/1, entry number 627); John Douglas Archer and Frederick Archer, who were both baptised at St Mary's, Warwick, 28 February 1901, when their parents address was Hampton Road, Warwick (CRO reference DR 446/9, entry number 611 and 612). Phyllis was baptised there 13 October 1902 (DR 447/9, entry number 719); her parents were at the same address. Edwin was baptised there 6 July 1905 (CRO reference DR 447/9, entry number 925). His parents were living at 50 Albert Street, Warwick, though his father was still described as a farmer. No other baptisms are recorded in the St Mary's registers up to September 1914. The burial registers have not been checked. "Spennell's Directories" show Joseph Archer at that address until 1909, when he is listed at 7 Victoria Street, Eleanor Elizabeth Archer's address.
Eleanor Elizabeth Archer was educated at Hunningham National School and by her mother (formerly a schoolmistress). She was an Assistant Overseer and Collector of Poor Rates for Barford from 1892-1924(?8). She ran a servants' registry from her home in Victoria Street, Warwick, circa 1910-1920s. She lived in Warwick from circa 1909 until her death on 26th January 1960. |
