Description | Between Thomas Gilks of Portsmouth, Hants, eldest son of John Gilks, late of Leamington Priors, wheelwright, deceased; Anna Gilks of Leamington Priors, widow and administratrix of John Gilks, George Carter of, auctioneer (the assignee of the estate and effects of John Dawkins of Leamington Priors, builder, dealer, chapman, and a bankrupt); the Honorable Alexander Nelson Hood of Cricket St Thomas, Somerset; Sir John Mordaunt of Walton, baronet; William Holbech of Farnborough, esquire; and Hugh Holbech of Farnborough, esquire, eldest son of William Holbech. John Gibbs had mortgaged two cottages and a blacksmith's shop in Farnborough to John Gilks for £190, by indentures of 15-16 December 1837 [see CR0457/29/3]. John Dawkins was declared bankrupt on 31st January 1839, and George Carter was appointed as the assignee of his estate. John Gilks died intestate on 20 March 1839 and his wife Anna Gilks was appointed the administratrix of his estate and John Gilks' eldest son, Thomas Gilks, the heir to his estate since attained the age of 21 years. Alexander Nelson Hood and Sir John Mordaunt (trustees for William and Hugh Holbech) then agreed to purchase a messuage, cottage, shop garden and other properties for £275. In this present indenture, Thomas Gilks, at the direction of Anna Gilks and George Carter, conveys to the trustees for William and Hugh Holbech two messuages and a blacksmith's shop, with the yards, gardens and outbuildings belonging to them, in Farnborough. One of the messuages is occupied by John Chater, tenant, and the other is occupied by Robert Harris. All other messuages, cottages and hereditaments in Farnborough, belonging to John Dawkins, were also conveyed. The properties were conveyed to the trustees as part of the marriage settlement of Hugh Holbech and Jane Sarah (now his wife), the indenture relating to which is dated 2 January 1838. Consideration: £50 paid to George Carter and £225 paid to Anna Gilks
