Description | Unlike the District Medical Officer, the Workhouse Medical Officer was employed to deal with the inmates of the Workhouse/Public Institution. Their duty was to attend to the sick in the workhouse, examine new inmates and report on sanitary conditions. Under the supervision and direction of the medical officer were day and night nurses who would attend to the patients in the sick and lying in wards
The records of the medical officer report on diet, health of the inmates, any sudden or accidental death as well as conditions that could be detrimental to the health of the inmates, effected by ventilation, drainage, warmth etc.,
The Medical Report books of the nurse in attendance in the Workhouse/Public Institution give the names of patients, type of ward, patients admitted and discharged that day with age and date of birth, observations made of patients etc. |
