Description | Pictured at work at his premises. Mr. Ernest Pitcher lives at [address removed] He originates from Wigan, Lancs, and has been a stonemason from the age of 15. He left Wigan and came to Nuneaton in 1953. It was then that he visited Mr. Holden in Leicester Road and asked if a job was available. Mr. Holden took him on there and then! During the second world war, Mr. Pitcher served for five years in the army, in the Royal Artillery, serving in the Persian Gulf, Middle East, Sicily, Italy, Belgium and Germany. He was demobilised in 1946. In 1963, when Mr. Holden retired, he bought the business and runs it single-handed, still under the name of Holden. His work can be seen in many local churchyards. He has two sisters, who also came to live in Nuneaton. One kept a Fish and Chip shop in Weddington and lived in [address removed] at one time. The other sister is a Mr. Walkden, who lives in [address removed] Mr. Ernest Pitcher died on December 13, 1985, aged 72. |
