Description | Proposal made by John Williams [Honorary Archivist at Willans Works] (member of Midlands branch of IME) and includes:
Note on the central valve engines;
Copy of the original specification for engine no. 3226;
History of the engine that was built for Maple & Co., Tottenham Court Road, London in 1900.
Photo of the engine and a 3000 IHP Willans central valve steam engine.
Proposal also has with it a letter from a member of the English Electric Steam Turbine Contracts team written after a visit to Maples store on 7 March 1957 with details of the engines; and two hand drawn sketches by Mark Robinson (28 February 1888) of parts of Maples first two engines (nos. 660 and 722).
Maples purchased eight engines from Willans & Robinson between 1887 and 1900. These were still installed in the 1950s and working. The Willans Works took back one of the engines (no. 3226) when they were scrapped in 1957. |
