TitleMill Street chapel, bundle of papers mainly about its sale in 1887
Date1885-1886
DescriptionThe chapel was built in 1829 by a breakaway group from Clemens Street Congregational Church, Leamington (architect S. Nicklin of Leamington). The breakaway group wished to continue using the liturgy of the Church of England. The first minister was the Rev. Bassano. For a short time after his death, the chapel was not used, but the congregation appealed to the Rev. Rowland Hill (in Leamington to take the waters) and he bought the property, refurbished it, and handed it over to trustees, to be used for services following the liturgy of the Church of England but not under episcopal control. A school was also built next to the chapel. The chapel was used by the Countess of Huntingdon's connection from the 1830s until c.1884. We have no information about any records of this congregation.
The Rev. Hill appointed trustees who eventually gave the property to the Village Itinerary, later known as Hackney College. The trustees of the college sold the property in 1886, after a local enquiry. These papers are the result of that sale.

1. Press cuttings from the 'Leamington Advertiser', 1885-1886, re the enquiry.
2. Charity Commissioners' Order permitting the sale, 23 November 1886.
3. Pr. sale particulars, including plan, 31 March 1887.
4. Papers relating to the Lett family vaults, and the effect of the sale: copy of letter to the Charity Commissioners and their reply; plan of vaults.
